Winter Weather Reminders
Outdoor Recess
Students will be outside during recess unless weather conditions pose a safety risk. Temperature, wind chill, sun/cloud conditions, humidity and wind velocity are monitored. On days of extreme weather conditions, we will consider a shortened or indoor recess. We request that you do not call the school to ask if the students will be going outside. Thank you.
Dress for the Weather
Students are expected to come to school dressed appropriately for the weather conditions and outdoor play. Parents sometimes request their children be kept indoors during recess times because they are not feeling well. For the most part, students with illnesses serious enough to prevent them from participating in normal school activities - physical education, recess or other outdoor activities - should remain at home until their condition improves.
Winter Safety
Despite the best efforts from our amazing caretaking team, there can still be slippery surfaces outside. Caretakers prioritize the main entrance, the pathways at the front of the school and the perimeter of the school/access to doors They also use pylons to indicate possible “hazards”.
Students and their families are reminded to wear appropriate footwear with good grip. City property, including paths is maintained by the Town of Richmond Hill. As noted by signage, the pathways on our field are not maintained during winter.

Reminders from Public Health - Flu Season
If your child has a cough or runny nose, they should stay home until symptoms have been getting better for at least 24 hours, and there has been no fever for 24 hours without taking fever-reducing medications.
Help protect your family and child’s school community by combining the flu vaccine with healthy habits like:
- Staying home when feeling sick
- Washing your hands often or using hand sanitizer with 70-90% alcohol if there is no soap and water
- Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow
- Cleaning frequently touched surfaces
- Wearing a well-fitted mask in crowded indoor settings (especially if you or someone at home is at risk for severe infection)
Together, these steps can make a big difference in preventing the spread of the flu and other seasonal viruses, helping keep students healthy and in school with fewer disruptions to work and family routines!
