Making the Invisible, Visible: October is Learning Disabilities (LD) Awareness Month

Learning Disabilities (LD) Awareness Month is recognized during the month of October. Learning Disabilities Awareness Month is a time to break stigma, highlight strengths, and build inclusion for people with learning disabilities (LDs) and ADHD. Awareness alone is not enough — together we can ensure every person has the right to learn and the power to achieve.

Did You Know…?

At least 1 in 10 Canadians has a learning disability — making LDs the most common disability in schools. ADHD frequently co-occurs, underscoring the need for integrated supports across education, mental health, and community services. (Statistics Canada, 2024).

What is a Learning Disability?

Learning disabilities affect how people take in, process, or use information. They are brain-based differences, not a reflection of intelligence or effort — and with the right support, individuals with LDs can achieve at the same level of success as their peers.

What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a brain-based condition that affects attention, self-regulation, and impulse control. People with ADHD may find it harder to focus, stay organized, or manage time — but these challenges are not due to lack of ability or effort. With understanding and the right support, individuals with ADHD can thrive in school, work, and daily life.

The Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario (LDAO) has launched their LD Awareness Month campaign with a focus on four key messages:

  • When we remove barriers, students with learning disabilities show their true abilities.
  • Students with LDs and ADHD have unique minds and remarkable potential.
  • Break the stigma — focus on abilities!
  • Inclusion works when students with learning disabilities get the support they need.
